JDM

Japan domestic market

What is JDM?

The term Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) is used by companies in Japan to refer to the local market for domestic goods (as opposed to the international market). Within car culture, this term refers to Japanese cars and parts designed and constructed to conform to Japanese vehicle and equipment regulations and to suit Japanese market preferences. In the 1970s and 80s, Japanese motor companies produced many popular performance cars and performance versions of existing cars, but many of these were never exported beyond Asia.

In the late 1980s and early 90s "grey imports" of Japanese performance cars (such as the Toyota Supra and Nissan Skyline) became abundant in Australia, Europe and America. Many factors, such as the interchangeability of parts, the low cost of obtaining an imported used car, and e-commerce via the Internet all allowed the expansion of the practice of modifying a low-cost performance car. Because of their light weight and the increasing availability of low-cost tuning equipment, Japanese performance cars exhibit high performance at low cost in comparison to dedicated sports cars. As professional sporting and racing with such vehicles increased, so did recreational use of these vehicles. JDM cars were limited by a jishu-kisei (gentlemen's agreement) among manufacturers to 280 horsepower in 1988 (lifted in 2004) and a top speed of 180km/h since the late 1970's mostly due to safety concerns and the latter due to concerns regarding bōsōzoku gangs.

JDM cars often differ in features and equipment from the very same cars sold for other markets. Cars built to JDM specifications may have stiffer suspension and improved throttle response over the very same car built for export to other countries, some features may be removed in order to stay below a certain pricing goal for the car such as using a conventional rear suspension instead of a double wishbone suspension and lack of electronic devices like Active Yaw Control. Furthermore, engine power of JDM sports cars is sometimes reduced because of stricter emission standards in other countries.
